The Show

Music of the show

Songs from Bollywood films serve as anchor for the show. The songs are however, rearranged in accordance with trends in World Ethnic Music. The sound-track has been prepared by 50 musicians and a vast array of instruments. There are 20 violin players, 10 different percussionists, one male and one female choirs, four female singers and two male singers.

A distinctive feature of the music of India is the proportional representation of Islamic, Hindu and Western musical traditions. This accounts for the varied and profound influences of musicians from all faiths. Added to this mix is the influence of Israeli musicians for this show, which makes it a unique blend of harmonies. Both the magical, musical synthesis and the manner of its creation which is evocative of the finest syncretism traditions symbolize the spirit of Bharati.

The Indian Raga tradition, wherein Ragas have a musical structure and scale, forms the musical basis of the show. Reflecting the laws and energies of nature, Ragas vary by the time of day. Correspondingly, the appropriateness of a raga is determined by the hour of the day. The same principle applies to seasons as well.

The live section of the show is based on classical music traditions. The improvised alaap of 'Santoor' and 'Bansuri' at the beginning of the Raga is derived from classical traditions. Each song has easily identifiable regional influences with a distinctive flavor or texture of its own.

Classical Indian music is characterized by a pedagogical tradition where each school or 'gharana' has its own approach. The master reveals the secrets of the ragas in a gradual, controlled manner and the pupil must follow the teacher step by step.

The western influences in this field of World Music, has meant connecting the western patterns and harmonies into non-western rhythms, melodies and ornaments. In this production, the western elements remain the envelope, not the content.
